The three “Doctor Who” 60th-anniversary specials kick off this coming weekend with “The Star Beast” on Saturday to be followed by “Wild Blue Yonder” and “The Giggle”.
The three specials, which bring back David Tennant and Catherine Tate, serve as both a tribute to the show’s past whilst also paving the way for where the show will go in the future under the new Doctor played by Ncuti Gatwa.
Showrunner Russell T. Davies is returning to shepherd in the new era and both he and Tennant popped up on the BBC talk show “The One Show” this week to tease the specials.
Tennant was asked to describe the differences between the episodes to which the pair explains that each episode is effectively standalone and each is tonally quite distinct. Tennant adds:
“Three Saturdays in a row. Doctor Who lives on a Saturday, I think. Yes, they’re very different. Each one is really quite unique. The first one is the sort of world of Doctor Who that you’ll recognise, I think. The second one is unlike any episode of Doctor Who ever done before. And the third one is… bananas.”
The first one, “The Star Beast,” will deal with the return of Donna and features both Beep the Meep (Miriam Margolyes) and the Wrarth Warriors as characters. This one effectively sounds like a big ol’ tribute to the prior Davies-Tennant era.
The third one, “The Giggle,” is the one with Neil Patrick Harris’ The Toymaker and is expected to be the big-budget action-style episode of the three.
The second one however, “Wild Blue Yonder,” remains fairly mysterious and is said to showcase Davies’ intent with the new era of the program along with being a part of the motivation for him to return.
The specials will air on November 25th, December 2nd and December 9th respectively.
