Ralph Macchio and Jackie Chan, the stars of the 1984 original and the 2010 remake of “The Karate Kid” respectively, are set to reprise their popular characters for the new “The Karate Kid” film at Sony Pictures.
Award-winning “I’m Not Okay with This” and “The End of the F—ing World” creator Jonathan Entwistle is directing the untitled feature which the studio says will continue the mythology of the original franchise.
A global search for a new actor to play the title character launched today, with Chan and Macchio appearing in an introductory video you can see below.
Rob Lieber (“Peter Rabbit”) wrote the script. Whilst plot specifics are under wraps, it’s said the story will follow a teenage from China now living on the U.S. east coast. They find strength and direction via martial arts and a tough but wise mentor.
Karen Rosenfelt is producing the film which aims to begin shooting in the Spring ahead of a December 13th 2024 release.
Previously it had been teased this was to be a Mr. Miyagi prequel, though that is not the case it seems. The final season of the beloved “Cobra Kai” sequel series, starring Macchio, is also filming shortly ahead of a late 2024 release.
