The launch of Sony’s PlayStation Portal device appears to have outpaced the demand that the company expected for the device.
The unit was released on Wednesday in the U.K., U.S., Japan, Canada and select European countries with others to follow at a later date (such as early February for Australia).
However, the $199.99 U.S. dollar handheld has sold enough units that it is now no longer available to order on the PlayStation Direct store in both the U.S. and U.K. with the former stating: “Please check back early December for more details on stock availability”.
Similarly, it is out at major retailers like Amazon, Best Buy, and GameStop. In the wake of this, scalpers have been spotted selling their ‘used’ PlayStation Portals for inflated prices of around 50% above the retail cost.
The Portal lets players stream their PS5 games using Remote Play to a dedicated device which is effectively a PS5 controller cut in half with a screen in the middle. Thus players will need to own PS5 hardware for it to work.
Whilst plenty online scoffed or lambasted the device prior to launch, reviews on gaming sites thus far have indicated it’s a niche accessory that appears to work well within its narrow operating parameters.
The Portal launched at the same time as rival Valve launched its more straightforward portable game console device – the Steam Deck OLED – which has been snagging stellar reviews.
