Ezra Claytan Daniels (“Doom Patrol,” “Night Sky”) has signed on to write the screenplay for the remake of Wes Craven’s 1991 horror feature “The People Under the Stairs” at Jordan Peele’s Monkeypaw Productions and Universal Pictures.
Brandon Adams, Everett McGill, Wendy Robie, A.J. Langer and Ving Rhames starred in the original which Craven wrote and directed, and produced.
It followed a young man named Fool (Brandon Adams) who breaks into the home of his family’s greedy landlords – a strange Reagan-esque couple known as the Robesons.
He soon finds a lot more than he bargained for waiting in the dungeon-like basement. As Fool attempts to flee before the psychopaths can catch him, he meets their daughter Alice (A.J. Langer) who attempts to escape with him.
Inspired partly by a true story, the film received solid reviews at the time for its satire of gentrification, class warfare, and capitalism.
Peele and Win Rosenfeld serve as producers on the project which is still in early development stages several years after Peele was announced as being involved back in 2020. Peele is not expected to direct.
