Actress and playwright Ana Nogueira (The Vampire Diaries) has been locked in as the writer on Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow for Warner Bros. Pictures and DC Studios. This is the next project showing serious signs of movement after Superman: Flyby started to gather pace.

A report in The Hollywood Reporter says she was already inside the tent at DC Studios. She was working away last year developing a Supergirl feature as a spinoff from The Flash and starring Sasha Calle as Supergirl once again.

James Gunn and Peter Safran came in to DC Studios as co-leads and everything DCEU that wasn’t already shooting was killed to allow the DCU to be born. A third Wonder Woman and Cavill’s return as Superman were all killed off, along with this Supergirl project, in favor of the DCU plans.

Part of that plan was a new Supergirl film without any connection to The Flash for the old DCEU. The inspiration for that was Tom King’s 2021 comic mini-series of the same name. The ever-reliable Dark Horizons has reminded us that, at the time the DCU lineup was announced for Chapter One: Gods And Monsters, Gunn said in a video

“Superman is a guy sent to Earth and raised by loving parents, whereas Supergirl in this story, she is a character raised on a chunk of Krypton. She watched everybody around her perish in some terrible way, so she’s a much more jaded character.”

THR says that Gunn and Safran were impressed enough by her work on the earlier attempt that they kept her on and locked he into a writing deal at DC Studios.

No director is attached to the project yet. The tone and approach of the script may inform director choices for Supergirl: Woman Of Tomorrow.
