Those fine folks at Fandango, via Discussing Film on X (the social media platform formerly known as Twitter) have dropped some fairly major footage from Ridley Scott’s Napoleon.
This would appear to be from the Battle Of Austerlitz. This was also known as the “Battle Of The Three Emperors” and, in history, as “Napoleon’s Masterpiece”. The French Grande Armée, now operating deep inside enemy territory, was at real risk of finding itself under attack from several directions by up to 400,000 men.
He baited his enemies to meet him at the battlefield of Austerlitz, which was dominated by the Pratzen Heights. To the West was complex terrain broken by streams, marshes, and rugged hills, with numerous small villages set among them, where an entire army corps might lie hidden and where attackers might be bogged down by relatively small numbers of well-placed defenders.
Through negotiations with his foes, Napoleon appeared weak, to make them feel that the French army was about to meet its doom if they came hard. When this was not the case, he harried his enemies to push them into retreat over the frozen Lake Satschen, where Napoleon ordered up 25 cannon to smash the ice on the lake tipping thousands of Russians into the freezing water, drowning up to 2,000 of them.
