Activision’s “Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III” is being taken to task by not just reviewers, but players as well after formal reviews for the recently released title have gone online.
With 32 critics reviews counted, the title is pulling in a 51/100 on Metacritic with not a single positive review in the batch as of time of writing. To be fair, many of the reviews remain to be classified though in terms of their positive/negative rating.
Still, it is by far the lowest-scoring major title for the franchise – far behind the 73/100 for “Call of Duty: Vanguard” and 76/100 of “Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War”.
It’s a similar story for the audience ratings with nearly 300 users giving it a dismal 1.4/10.
Criticism has gone well beyond the already reported on the short length (3-4 hours) of the game’s campaign mode to complaints of this originally being built as DLC for ‘Modern Warfare 2’ before trying to be sold as a full-fledged title. Here’s a sampling of review quotes:
“Just about everything outside of multiplayer will leave you wondering why this is a full-price game” – NME
“A Call of Duty game of this low quality released a decade ago would have been a scandal. Now, it’s emblematic of an approach to a franchise that’s in desperate need of a reality check.” –
“Modern Warfare 3 has finally succeeded in unmooring the series entirely from history and from meaning. It continues the previous games’ practice of adding political texture to explosive ultra-violence, but it has never been more of a hollow shooting gallery, a ghost of a game and a departure from everything that may have once made the franchise compelling to play.” – Polygon
“Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III is one of the worst games of this year and proof that Activision really needs to give it a long break. A real shame that a series with so much history is being treated like this.” – Atomix
“Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III” is available now on PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X|S.
