Sony has delayed the third film in their “Venom” series which adapts the Marvel Comics character and notable Spider-Man antagonist.
The film previously had a July 14th 2024 release date, but will now open on November 8th 2024 – a date Sony already had earmarked for a previously unannounced Marvel movie. The studio has also already earmarked PLFs and IMAX screens for the film on that date.
Filming on the project began late June in Spain with production to film later in London, but the project was halted after just a few weeks when the actor’s strike began. With a tentative agreement reached and the strike officially ending after 118 days, the production is aiming to get back to filming as fast as possible.
Kelly Marcel is writing and directing the film based on a story she co-wrote with the film’s star Tom Hardy. Juno Temple and Chiwetel Ejiofor are also onboard in key roles that are undisclosed.
This marks just the start of what is bound to be a scheduling nightmare as productions race to get back up and running and studio film slates try and reconfigure themselves to get back into fighting shape.
The two prior “Venom” films pulled in $1.36 billion worldwide at the box office, both movies saw bows in October of 2018 and 2021 respectively.
“Venom 3” will mark one of three Sony Pictures Universe of Marvel Characters (SPUMC) films hitting screens next year – the other two being “Madame Web” in February and “Kraven the Hunter” in August.
The highly anticipated animated sequel “Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse” has yet to set a release date.
