Marvel Studios’ upcoming “Echo” series marks the company’s first foray into TV-MA territory – putting it in the same territory as former Marvel Television titles on Netflix like “Daredevil” and “Luke Cage”.
The result is a series with super heroics being relatively grounded, fights get to be brutal, and there will be some blood and violence that impacts over the course of its five episodes.
Alaqua Cox stars in the series as deaf Native American hero Maya Lopez who has the talent to imitate any opponent’s fighting style. Pursued by Wilson Fisk (Vincent D’Onofrio), she returns to her hometown in Oklahoma to confront her own family and legacy.
Following this morning’s release of the trailer, director Sydney Freeland has spoken with Collider and explained that as a big fan of Netflix’s “Daredevil,” the show is attempting to capture that series’ grittier-than-usual Marvel tone here:
“The story dictated our approach. Coming off Hawkeye, Maya is a villain, so tonally, we wanted to lean into that. I don’t know if I can say this, but I love the Netflix Daredevil. It’s great.
We also very adamantly wanted to show that these people in our show bleed, they die, they get killed, and there are real consequences. It’s not the fate of the universe at stake because once you go that broad, you can lose sight a little bit. And so, that dictated the tone.”
The release of the series, which was delayed due to the recent strikes, is set for January 10th and will mark the first time Marvel Studios has released a series on the service in binge-able form. The show will be available simultaneously on Disney+ and Hulu.
