An extensive new piece in Variety has gone into the various woes of Marvel Studios recently and revealed the company last month had an “angst-ridden” annual retreat as the company is reeling from a series of disappointments.

One of the biggest issues for the company is that of Jonathan Majors, the actor who was poised to carry the next phase of the Marvel Cinematic Universe as the villain Kang the Conqueror.

Majors is headed to a high-profile trial in New York later this month on domestic violence charges, but whatever the outcome Marvel has already been forced to reconsider its plans continuing its slate built around him.

The trade indicates executives have discussed backup plans, which would include a pivot to another comic book adversary – with Doctor Doom being the obvious candidate mentioned.

Trouble is Majors is already a big presence in the MCU thanks to both “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania” in February and more recently the second season of “Loki”. The trade indicates that show ends with Kang being core to the fifth “Avengers” film in 2026, not unsurprising considering the film is named after him.

A source for the trade who has seen the finale says: “Marvel is truly f—– with the whole Kang angle. And they haven’t had an opportunity to rewrite until very recently [because of the WGA strike]. But I don’t see a path to how they move forward with him.”

That sixth and final episode of “Loki” airs November 9th and is the last of Majors’ work filmed in the role so far.
