Amazon MGM Studios and Amblin Television have begun the early development of a series version of its iconic 1982 horror feature “Poltergeist”.
No writer is currently attached to the project whilst Darryl Frank and Justin Falvey are set to executive produce. There are no story details at this time either.
The original film follows the Freeling family who move into a new home only to discover that it is infested with ghosts. After the ghosts kidnap their young daughter, the Freelings work with a parapsychologist and a spiritual medium to free her.
The film was a major success upon release, grossing approximately $121 million worldwide against a reported budget of $10.7 million. Two less well-regarded sequels, and a poorly received 2015 reboot were also released.
This would mark the second “Poltergeist” series following the late 1990s show “Poltergeist: The Legacy” which aired across Showtime and the Sci-Fi Channel.
The new project marks the latest attempt by Amazon to adapt MGM’s most famous IP. It joins the new works involving the “Robocop,” “Barbershop,” and “Legally Blonde” franchises on the way.
